  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from R. C. Fleet -- Slow but enjoyable : If you loved Buchan's "39 Steps" and enjoyed his rustic "John McNab," you will want to read this book. Still, it is not his top-of-the-line. Very slow in getting started. Still, he loves his characters, and does create a "realistic" (given the times) basis for the "intrigue" that follows. Y'know what? Read this when you are not inundated by current events and pressures-to-be-relevant and it will be fine. Maybe more than fine, depending on your mood. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Not Buchan's Best But Very Good Indeed : John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, was a proliofic writer of "thrillers" as he called them, for his own amusement. His two best-known works are "The 39 Steps" and "Greenmantle," both of them classic adventure stories featuring Major Richard Hannay, the very model of a softspoken but courageous man. "Huntingtower" isn't in the same league as those two books, but anything Buchan has written is well worth reading. It is one of the tales featuring Mr Dickson McCunn, a retired "provisions merchant" (a grocer) who has sold his extensive chain of shops and is on holiday, when he becomes involved in an attempt to rescue a lady in distress, held by villains in durance vile at the house whose name furnishes the title. The lady is a White Russian who has fled the Bolshevieks and is the object of the chief villain's affections; she wants bnothing to do with him, of course. As the plot unwinds, McCunn meets various characters, including a "radical" who in the ends becomes a heroic sacrifice to his love for the lady. An entertaining way to spend an evening or two, but if you want the real power of Buchan's talent, read "Greenmantle." ( Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sarah -- Enjoyable read : It starts out a bit slow in action as compared to other books by the same author, but it’s never boring and the action picks up later. I enjoyed the whole story. Love the characters. Buchan brings them to life with their dialect. Having grown up in lower class mixed neighborhoods myself, I don’t have much trouble picking up meaning from context. If that doesn’t describe you, this book might be slow reading. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Terrible design of a good book : I just received this book, so I haven't read it yet, so this is NOT a review on the actual story. What is so disappointing is the way this book was produced. It's more like a big floppy pamphlet than a real book, with oversized pages, and doesn't have even something as basic as page numbers. Part of the enjoyment of reading a physical book (as opposed to an e-book) is how it is to hold, the print, layout, etc. Shame on this seller to offer such a dismal production of what I believe will be a good read. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Don Kidwell -- "I learned in the war that civilisation anywhere is a very thin crust" Better bargain would be a collection like... : ...JOHN BUCHAN Ultimate Collection ASIN: B01DMG2D94, The Essential John Buchan Collection ASIN: B002D48NR8 or The John Buchan Collection ASIN: B017SA407I ( Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2015 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from william newmoon -- Huntingtower by John Buchan : According to the story line of this quaint little book, a modern day fairy tale occurred in rural Scotland a short time after 1918. This romance has all the qualities to be expected of a proper fairy tale, starting with a captive princess, ending with combat between good and evil and the triumph of law. The author, John Buchan, a Scottish writer, describes his country and its culture of that time in this realistic and sentimental tale. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2015 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Clare G -- British accents : The use of phonetic spelling to simulate several area accents is interesting but becomes a bit tedious after many , many chapters . The action level of the plot moves a bit slowly ( Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Robert M. League -- Well done : This author has taken me to a time and place in my imagination unlike any place I have been before. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from George -- A classic boys own adventure yarn. : Does anybody do boys own adventure yarns with their feats of noble selfless bravery and edge of the seat chases better than John Buchan? I have been reading him on and off for the past fifty years and his description of countryside, weather and nature that invariably forms the backdrop against a a stirring adventure always seems to lift the spirits. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from MikeS -- Defective OCD version - do not buy : Finding this version grammatically impossible, I checked against another version of the same novel. This one has clearly been created by a crude and inaccurate optical character recognition scan. The narrative is interrupted with page numbers and completely wrong words appear every few sentences. It is unreadable. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 29, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from ValinKent -- Try to appreciate this as a book of its time : A rip roaring adventure and real page turner. Having now read several free modern kindle books the grammar and composition is far more elegant than many of the offerings these days. Socially it's very much of its time. There were occasions when I squirmed at the class attitudes expressed and I actually gasped towards the end when one character reflects on a slight disability displayed by another. The gorbal diehards are a delight and are pratchett like in their pugnacity and energy (what is it about glaswegian accents that provides the grounding for such rugged , humorous and indomitable characters? ) The main hero reminds me of Bilbo Baggins in his doubts and attitudes so Perhaps that's why I was drawn to carry on reading this book. Without them the novel would simply have been a rather preposterous adventure yarn with generally conventional characters. With the diehards and the little grocer gracing its pages it is elevated into a different league. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 5, 2013 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from James Brydon -- Classic adventure story : A classic slice of traditional adventure fiction by one of the great masters of the genre. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 20, 2013 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Partisan -- Elderly hero in a great yarn. : Typical John Buchan adventure yarn that introduces an unlikely hero in Dickson McCunn, a retired grocery manager with dreams and unknown depths, and the Gorbals Diehards - a group of deprived but streetwise Glaswegian kids (Buchan's version of Sherlock Holmes' Baker Street Irregulars). If you've read any Buchan books before, the storyline is probably familiar but that doesn't undermine the pure enjoyment to be had from becoming immersed in the world portrayed. For my taste, too many of Buchan's books end up in pitched battles between good and evil - well described but stretching credibility almost to breaking point.
